ABSTRACT

The specificity of locality in relation to issues of choice has been stressed in relation to the research on school choice and markets. The system is administered nationally by the Welsh Assembly Government and Wales has no City Technology Colleges and only a small proportion of Grant Maintained schools. The National Curriculum for Wales differs slightly from that taught in the English system and the provision of Ysgolion Cymraeg enables pupils at both primary and secondary levels to be educated through the medium of Welsh. The policy for Roman Catholic secondary schools across Wales is that they act as 'feeder schools' for centrally located and voluntarily aided Catholic Tertiary Colleges. In most instances any higher education guidance is provided as part of the Personal and Social Education curriculum. Some schools in the study made considerable use of social networks in order to help prepare pupils to choose universities.
