ABSTRACT

This chapter explores modern themes in order to develop some typologies of both the schools and families in the study. It offers some additional theorising on the data in order to underscore the complexities of social class and higher education choices in order to comment on the very real class based university challenge. The higher education market is highly stratified and the process of selection and application complex. A differentiated and hierarchical system has emerged across the sector in relation to the levels of facilitation afforded to pupils in respect of their career and higher education guidance. In contrast both Argoed College and Llanover School are located in working class areas and both fit the 'Trusting' typology. Both have highly successful Compact arrangements with 'new' universities locally and this is reflected in their approach to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service process.
