ABSTRACT

The intra-aortic balloon pump is a device used to provide temporary circulatory support during times of actual or potential cardiac dysfunction and is the most frequently used circulatory-assist device for critically ill cardiac patients available today. This chapter explains the theory and haemodynamics of intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation, the indications for its use, potential complications that can arise, and with clear illustrations provides a practical guide on how to interpret changes in arterial pressure waveforms caused by balloon inflation and deflation.
