ABSTRACT
The process of thrombosis is a complex interplay between platelets and plasma proteins and the vessel endothelium. This chapter examines these interactions and the interruptions in normal pathophysiology that lead to blood clot formation. Heparin is the primary medication used to prevent thrombosis. The various types of heparin and the laboratory tests used to monitor heparin therapy are discussed.
