ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces teacher to some of the ideas and reasoning that underpin action research, outline the action research cycle and show teacher how teacher can carry out action research for themself. Action research can help teacher remain tenacious when things get difficult, because it is focused on solutions. The initial step in the planning stage of action research is to identify what area of teachers' practice they want to address in order to improve as a teacher. Perhaps teacher want to find an effective way to help low-attaining Year 7 pupils learn more mathematics, or explore the impact of allowing pupils to sit in friendship groups during lessons. The final part of each cycle of action research is deciding what they have learned by completing the process and considering what to do next. It may be that the next step is to continue with an identical or similar idea or practice.
