ABSTRACT

The 20th century saw many engineering achievements that have without a doubt improved virtually every single aspect of human life. The new century presents with many challenges that stem from the past and many others that are the result of population growth and the need to continue in supporting their lives at least at the same standard of living of the generation in a sustainable manner that does not undermine the living standards of future generations. In 2016, the United Nations launched 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and there is little doubt that engineering will play a crucially important role in achieving many of these goals. The exponential growth of information being available at fingertips and the means of instant electronic communication over vast distances has afforded educational opportunities as never before. Educators must make use of such tools to complement, and not to the detriment of, traditional ways of teaching and learning.
