ABSTRACT
This chapter will provide the reader with detailed knowledge of the various phonic elements that are required for effective decoding. While it is acknowledged that phonics instruction needs to be systematic and explicit, it must also maintain strong links with authentic reading and writing contexts. The notion of integrating phonics into literacy lessons is introduced in this chapter and further developed in Chapters 6 and 7.
