ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses academic careers in I-O Psychology, a sector which often plays to its own rules and timelines. Specifically, we discuss what to expect in pursuing this career as far as the typical job requirements of teaching, research, and service, which are weighted differently depending on the institution. We discuss types of job options, and when and how to apply. Then we delve more deeply into the application process, the materials needed and the academic interview process, which often involves a campus visit and delivery of a research colloquium. Finally, we get into success in academic jobs starting from the first days, years, and beyond, including issues like the dreaded publish-or-perish model, promotions, and more.
