ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses consulting jobs and careers in I-O Psychology, a sector which employs about one fourth of I-O practitioners, and is appealing to many because of varied work and the opportunity to travel. We discuss what to expect in pursuing a career in consulting, and how to make oneself a strong candidate for this type of job. Specifically, we get into what types of roles and job options are available in consulting, when and how to apply in terms of timing, finding leads, and submitting application materials. We then further delve into the application process, what to expect in interviews, and how to present oneself well. Then, we get into how to have success in consulting from the first days, years, and beyond. Finally, as many I-O practitioners choose to go the independent consulting route, we touch upon the pros and cons of going at it alone versus joining a consulting firm.
