ABSTRACT

This chapter is meant to be a high-level overview of the ins and outs of graduate school in I-O Psychology. We provide insight into important graduate school choices such as what courses to take and how to choose and deal with an advisor, although graduate students may not have much choice in those decisions. Then, we get into what the master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation are, and how to go about completing these research projects, which require highly independent work and self-imposing of some structure. Networking is important in many careers, but this is especially true in I-O Psychology, and we discuss how to network within and outside of one’s department. Ironically, graduate students are not always the best at managing stress and well-being, so we also discuss life balance and the importance of self-care in graduate school.
