ABSTRACT

This chapter covers internships and applied experience, which are important for those who are considering applied careers in I-O Psychology. We provide our perspective on whether graduate students should seek an internship, which we believe is valuable in gaining work experience and refining one’s career goals. We then discuss the search for an internship including timing, types of internships, and how to begin a search while in graduate school. Applications can be competitive and there are certain things students can do from the beginning of a graduate program to begin building skills needed in an internship. Then we focus on internship experience itself, including how to be successful by communicating goals and expectations openly. Finally, we mention what students can do in the case that they graduate without an internship, or the other extreme of being too successful in an internship to the neglect of their studies.
