ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with topics related to licensure and certification in I-O Psychology. Licensure is a controversial topic in the field and one that a lot of students do not get enough information on from their program faculty. We address some frequently asked questions about licensure such as where the debate stems from, which is related to the issue of a legal requirement to use the title of “Psychologist,” resulting in most I-O practitioners operating under different job titles or labels. Next, we clarify that licensure is not required in I-O Psychology but there are certain reasons why one might want to be licensed, and then delve into how to become licensed, including the typical steps and requirements. Certification is another option for professional recognition and we discuss types of certification that are available for different purposes, such as coaching.
