ABSTRACT

The rural population of the Yerevan Province lived in villages. More than 99% of the arable land was used for farming, small vegetable gardens, orchards, vineyards and pastures. Less than 1% of the land was used for dwellings, a clear indication of living conditions that had to give greater importance to food production than personal comfort. Pastureland composed some two-thirds of all the land utilized by the inhabitants. There were two types of pastures used by nomads and settled people: yaylaks in summer and kishlaks in winter. Farmland was divided into fields that required irrigation and those that could grow crops relying on rainfall and melting snow. Pastureland composed some two-thirds of all the land utilized by the inhabitants. There were two types of pastures used by nomads and settled people: yaylaks in summer and kishlaks in winter.
