ABSTRACT

A client learns the dilemma counseling method on PLATO computer-based Dilemma Counseling System (DCS) by constructing the dilemma formulation and the dilemma matrix for several sample problems. Students who were experiencing troublesome psychological dilemmas were randomly assigned to a PLATO DCS group or to a no-contact control group. The Dilemma Counseling component teaches users how to use the dilemma counseling method and how to apply the method to their own dilemmas. Subjects in the PLATO DCS group responded to a questionnaire that was designed to evaluate PLATO DCS. Subjects evaluated each of the three PLATO DCS components with respect to their helpfulness in solving the subject's dilemmas. Component 1 dealt with the evaluation of PLATO DCS as a teacher. Correlations were computed among the evaluation component scores and the follow-up measures taken during the one-week and the one-month follow-up sessions.
