ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book reflects the range of empirical research in the area of occupational socialization and working lives which has been undertaken in the University at Cardiff. It focuses on how occupational identities and cultures are shaped, maintained and reproduced. The book describes a variety of coping strategies and occupational culture. It demonstrates how the work situations and feelings of marginality of FE teachers and teachers in special schools are interwoven with their clients' similar experiences. The book offers complementary perspectives on colleagueship and group management in occupational settings. It emphasizes the local, situated character of occupational life and socialization. The technical and social division of labour is reproduced daily in the everyday lives and experiences of workers and trainees.
