ABSTRACT

The oneness of mind among Reed's top management group has been criticized by some observers as dangerously myopic. Perspective management uses unifying principles, or in other words mutually benefitting principles, to harmonize diverse desires and outlooks. It addresses the need to take into account the many and often conflicting points of view held by all those affected by an organization. Without perspective management, firms as sprawling as P&G could easily drown in a sea of complexity. The best conceptual road maps include mutually benefitting principles, fundamental guidelines and philosophies that can fulfill diverse desires, shape daily actions, and create profitable outcomes. The importance of managing by principle was brought vividly home to us recently as we watched a financial services company try to adjust to its new parent corporation. Mutually benefiting principles in a self-management environment perpetuate themselves. Power management gives individuals the freedom to work and act within the boundaries of an organization's unifying principles.
