ABSTRACT

Martinez, a member of the Navajo tribe, shares his career path from being a hotshot firefighter to becoming a teacher. His struggles during childhood helped shape him into the caring teacher he is today. His frustrations with his son’s education motivated him to become a teacher. His connection with Zuni: Engaging Teachers and Community (ZETAC) began with needing support to obtain his bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He credits ZETAC for supporting him in his educational journey. His hope now is to inspire his own children and to prove to them anything is possible. His journey has been a life lesson in communication, discipline, and integrity, and his family has experienced it with him. In 10, 20, 30 years he wants his children to be proud to tell their friends and their families, “My father is a teacher and a coach.”
