ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the difference between leadership styles and leadership roles in making a community health improvement coalition a success. It is important to differentiate between leadership styles and roles. A leadership style is a distinctive manner of conducting oneself. A leadership role is a function or position that is assumed by a member of the coalition to make the coalition run smoothly. There are many types of leadership styles that a person can assume to lead a coalition, but there are four very important roles that must be assumed to make a coalition a success. In any community health improvement coalition the leader’s main job is to motivate people to change to the new behaviors that are needed to improve the health status of the community. Coalition leaders need to understand what motivation is and how to use it effectively in leading change. Motivation is a key ingredient in making any change. It is the way change leaders are going to activate the behavior that they desire in others in the organization.
