ABSTRACT

People think of ghettos as places full of poor people, but ghettos occur whenever people live with others like themselves and remain apart from those who are not, something that characterizes wealthy communities as well as poor ones and that reduces the potential of the people who live there, regardless of their economic status. Architects have long worked against the idea of ghettos although many practitioners often end up creating them for their wealthiest clients, despite the profession’s ethical responsibility to counter such segregation and to avoid preserving it in the name of just serving the clients’ wishes.
