ABSTRACT

While most cultures view health as a basic human right and something that cannot be denied a person in need of treatment, housing is not always viewed the same way, even though humans cannot survive without shelter and our health is ultimately connected to the stability and adequacy of our housing. In highly individualistic cultures – and ironically in some of the richest countries – people are held responsible for securing their own housing, even as we make it increasingly expensive and difficult to do so. The architectural profession should hold itself responsible to change that unfair – and unethical – situation and to take the lead in making the case that health and housing are inseparable.
