ABSTRACT

Inequality has grown around the world, which has led to political instability as well as the impoverishment of millions of people, whose collective wealth comes nowhere near that of the richest individuals. While many architects may not agree with such inequality, the profession has been complicit in its creation, with a practice model that drives the profession to serve mainly the rich. This chapter makes the case that the field has an ethical obligation to meet not just clients’ needs, but also to give everyone access to, and opportunities within, the built environment, increasing equality in the face of too much inequality.
