ABSTRACT

The NMC (2018a) in their recently produced standards of nurse proficiency indicate that nurses must: ‘protect health through understanding and applying the principles of infection prevention and control, including communicable disease surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship and resistance’ (NMC, 2018a: 12, Section 2.12). It is thus a key skill that must be developed and practised regularly for reduction of infection risk, which affects patients, carers and healthcare professionals, as a priority.
