ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2, I draw upon several historical and contemporary events and the practical issues that have shaped the context of Nigeria’s contentious political culture which, invariably, has been consequential in the course of her national political development. I develop three illustrative constructs (primordial, conflictual, and pragmatic-instrumental) as the defining characteristics of Nigeria’s evolving political culture; as well as the role of the military in a democracy and how to make it more accountable to civilian control.
