ABSTRACT

Conflict is not unusual in PD groups and can occur between students and also between tutors and students. Based on her own research into tutor–student conflict in counsellor training and personal experiences of conflict observed when facilitating PD groups, Jayne Godward looks at why conflict might occur and explores ways in which this can be dealt with. She touches on general difficulties that can arise which may affect the group process and the development of the group.

The chapter covers a clarification of what conflict is and asks you to look at your reactions to this. It examines the positives and negative effects of conflict in PD groups and looks at why conflict occurs. Primary research findings on dealing with conflict are discussed drawing on tutors’ views of this and a conflict resolution model is presented.
