ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how to approach nineteenth-century poetry in particular. It show that teachers in the general teaching of poetry and give teachers some fresh approaches to make it something teachers and their students feel excited about studying. The chapter demonstrates that teachers just how methods really can bring nineteenth-century poetry alive in the classroom. It suggests that teachers how richly rewarding the teaching and learning of nineteenth-century poetry can be to all age groups. Contextual factors will need to be taken into account, too, of course, and careful teaching of historical and cultural context alongside the poem should allow students to consider how and why contemporary debates may have influenced the poet and add richness to their interpretation. Thematic teaching obviously has its place and there can be much of interest to discuss in the different attitudes towards, for example, love, or nature, over the course of one hundred years.
