ABSTRACT

This chapter provides teachers with a range of ideas and approaches to give teachers the confidence and enthusiasm to broaden the types of novels they are willing to teach. It deals with the assumption that teachers will not be able to read the book in class with their students in a way that teachers most probably would with a shorter novel. Depending on the novel, their students and the time of year when they are teaching the novel, teachers may want to direct their students to read the whole novel in one go, or teachers may want to break it down into smaller sections and tackle each one at a time in class before the students read the next section. Key to the studying of long novels is encouraging students to step up and take more of a lead over their own learning, rather than relying on teachers to give them the answers.
