ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents the case study of departmental improvement. The initial improvement had to be driven as a department and be collaborative; the author’s own vision was to create a department with a shared vision and distributed leadership. The author introduces effective systems for tracking, monitoring and evaluating data and classroom teachers to use data to monitor students and inform teaching and learning for departmental improvement. A contributing factor to students being able to ‘coast’ could have been attributed to the use of differentiation within the department. Another departmental vision was to foster a more collaborative culture within the department. This included sharing both good practice and resources. The improvement plan would become a working document that was brought to departmental meetings to evaluate progress towards the actions. Any department within any context will have areas for improvement and even high-performing departments must not become complacent.
