ABSTRACT

Monitoring, evaluation and review are separate processes, though they are usually linked. Monitoring provides the evidence for evaluation, which is concerned with issues of quality; it involves considering whether or not performance or service could be improved. Evidence for monitoring the experienced curriculum can come from colleagues, students and parents. The prospect of monitoring provision and standards may seem overwhelming to a newly appointed middle leader. With appraisal formally linking performance to pay for all teachers it is essential that middle leaders have the right skills and outlook to be effective in both monitoring and developing their team. Appraisal for teachers is based on legislation and is a legal requirement. In using appraisal to help staff improve their work and thus improve provision and outcomes for students, effective target setting will be necessary. Effective middle leaders evaluate the performance of individual colleagues as well as their team overall.
