ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on subject leadership and presents an existing heads of department and those preparing for subject leadership. As a middle leader, they will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills at a relatively small scale within clear boundaries. The effectiveness of middle leaders is critical in driving forward whole school improvement. The chapter provides a head teacher’s perspective on expectations around leading the subject, leading the team and leading within a whole school leadership structure. Increasingly online networks stand alongside actual networks which enable middle leaders to discuss areas of development and concern whilst sharing resources. Many schools also have cross-curricular days which contribute to their PSHE curriculum. While middle leaders may be working within a whole school framework for teaching and learning it is critical that they set their expectations with their team. Any behaviour system is likely to have a specific role for middle leaders.
