ABSTRACT

Goal 8 in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is to promote sustainable economic growth and productive employment. Macroeconomic policies are generally focused on growth with employment. However, for the ROK, which is currently experiencing growth with a lower employment rate than before, it is necessary to establish policies to stabilize the economy based on the interrelationships of growth and employment which is essential for sustainable development. This study aims to estimate the economic sustainability for SDG 8, which consists of 3 topics: (1) sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth; (2) full and productive employment; and (3) decent work for all. Applying factor analysis, this study analyzes and captures the change of the nation’s economic sustainability over time for SDG 8, with 12 sub-goals during 1990–2015. Based on the data for SDG 8, the sustainability index has fluctuated with time but with an increasing trend. The variables related to economic growth in particular showed a great influence, and the sustainability level of 1998 was the lowest.
