ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the new technology BeamPro, and how it could help people with disabilities to make meaningful museum experiences. It explores several selected art and cultural institutions including the Seattle Art Museum, the San Diego Air and Space Museum, and the Fine Arts Museums in San Francisco. Museum accessibility for everyone has been an issue for many years, and museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions typically pride themselves on their accessibility and inclusive education for visitors with different disabilities. According to the New York Times, the Metropolitan Museum of Art provided a ‘rolling chair’ for people with mobility issues as early as 1908 and offered gallery talks for blind children in 1913. Museum studies have concluded that museum experiences have the ability to motivate and empower learners of all ages, especially young students. The museums range from art and air space to music and natural history.
