ABSTRACT

Although the Bible makes it clear that people have different endowments, the faculty of vision was opened up at Pentecost to every disciple, potentially enabling every Christian believer to use their built-in faculty of mental imagery to tune into a Holy Spirit-empowered visionary wavelength. The discussion throughout this book has focused on this generic visionary capacity, and therefore the archetype of a “visionary Christian” has not been restricted to a contemporary prophet or mystic but has been presented as someone who utilises his/her inherent skills to receive and behold divine vision to good effect. However, in many believers the visionary channel may not be functioning to full capacity, and it was the desire to offer tools for activating one’s skills in this area that motivated this book’s survey of our existing knowledge about vision and mental imagery across a wide range of domains. The chapter concludes with a discussion of one of the best-known vision statements of all time, the “I Have a Dream” speech delivered by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Washington, DC in 1963.
