ABSTRACT

This chapter continues to explorer the practical implications of the theory of vision for enriching Christian life and ministry. The discussion begins with revisiting a dilemma raised in the previous chapter concerning an existing tension between wishing to avoid unrealistic pipe-dreams and not wanting to constrain God’s purposes by channeling them into what appears realistic from a human perspective. We shall then examine why “vision leaks” by considering the inherent limitations of human efforts to behold divine vision as well as by analysing why the process of realising a Christian vision is so often riddled with challenges and setbacks. It will be argued that, notwithstanding such challenges, obstacles can be overcome by perseverance and mistakes can have a maturing impact if handled well. Then, drawing on psychological research concerning ways of nurturing and strengthening mental imagery, the chapter presents a wide range of practical strategies to cultivate vision systematically.
