ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case history for the Celrobic anaerobic pretreatment plant located in Beloit, Wisconsin. A Celrobic anaerobic wastewater pretreatment plant has been constructed and is pretreating industrial wastewater prior to discharge into the municipal wastewater collection system. In addition, reactor sizing was based on experience gained from the existing Celrobic anaerobic reactors. Industrial park contributors have been made aware of this problem, and efforts have been successfully made recently to reduce the organic loading by the individual sources. The first step in designing any treatment system is to develop a solid design basis in order to optimize selection and sizing of equipment. The influent design parameters are based on data provided by Enzyme Bio-Systems Ltd. and the City of Beloit. The design basis was developed using results of the wastewater characterization and anaerobic batch treatability tests. The relationship of solids retention time to hydraulic retention time is a key to a successful high-rate anaerobic process.
