ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the process development, full scale design and performance of a 2,500 m3/day capacity hybrid anaerobic treatment process located at the Lakeview Water Pollution Control Plant in Mississauga, Ontario. The reduced performance of the fixed film filter reactors was attributed to the reduced hydraulic retention time caused by the reduced reactor volumes. The hybrid anaerobic process treats the byproduct liquors from a sludge thermal conditioning process at the plant. The most suitable design for thermal conditioning liquor treatment was found to be a unique hybrid configuration combining anaerobic suspended growth and fixed film filter technology. The design of the hybrid anaerobic process followed six years of laboratory and pilot scale process development and study. The HYAN process is equally applicable for other high strength wastes that have a potential for excess inert solids accumulation. The success of the design parameters and process developments has been demonstrated at full scale at the Lakeview Water Pollution Control Plant.
