ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on an onsite pilot plant test of the Celrobic anaerobic biological process, treating the segregated wastewater from production of soft Italian cheeses. In considering the possible application of the Celrobic high rate anaerobic system to pretreat the cheese dairy wastes, it became obvious that the segregation of the more contaminated wastewaters would mean a more economical overall process. The Celrobic 20-liter pilot unit which was used to treat the strong waste was patterned after the units that were used to provide design information for the existing full-scale systems. The system includes: waste collection/reactor feed tank, reactor, reactor feed effluent and recycle, and offgas monitoring system. The test program demonstrated that a Celrobic Unit can continuously treat a strong dairy waste at a loading of 0.75 lb/cfd to produce an effluent suitable for discharge to a conventional aerobic process.
