ABSTRACT

This chapter relates the Fourier descriptor approach in particulate morphology with certain clustering algorithms based on the axiomatic structure of fuzzy sets. A fundamental method of the science is to classify the states of an individual physical process by groups of the observations which admit generalization to laws from which people may then try to infer relationships between physical processes. Postscripts to scientific papers are - unless they are technical appendices - viewed nowadays with a certain suspicion. However, in view of the unusual and distinctive nature of this workshop, the author felt justified in exercising a certain amount of poetic license in this respect. It is believed, however, that the collaborative research arising from people's interaction will substantiate that this type of conference is a most effective means of promoting rapid strides in a concentrated research area.
