ABSTRACT

In the command module there was a dispenser for normal drinking water, as well as two taps that produced measured amounts of water warmed by the excess heat from the fuel cells. Water was injected into a food package which the astronaut then 'kneaded' for several minutes to ensure a good mixture. Food for the astronauts was carefully planned to provide a balanced intake over the period of the flight. The system devised for the space shuttle is much more sophisticated and can be used by both male and female astronauts. However, astronauts in the lunar module (LM) faced their own problems when it came to sleeping arrangements. By Apollo 15 a suit re-design made them easier to remove in the LM's cabin and from that flight on the crew were able to strip to their long johns in order to sleep. Stored along with the food were toothbrushes and a two-ounce tube of toothpaste for each crew member.
