ABSTRACT

SCORIM is a new patented process employing novel equipment that, for the first time, creates dynamics to the molten plastics inside the mold cavity. This is a specifically designed device that mounts at the end of the injection-molding machine and has three specific functions: first, the SCORIM head divides and melts from the barrel into two separate streams. Second, the SCORIM head heats and maintains the two streams at a selected melt temperature. Third, the SCORIM head acts as a pressure chamber and supports the platform for the hydraulic cylinders to force and move the melt streams into and through the mold cavity(s). This is a specifically designed electronic system that monitors, selects, controls, and limits the many functions of the SCORIM process. The SCORIM head is located between the injection screw and the mold, directly attached to the barrel. The SCORIM apparatus showed an ability to significantly improve the weld line strengths of all the reinforced polymers used.
