ABSTRACT

The laser industry, although it should be concerned as we indicate also with social variables of the future, is most interested in Herman Kahn, one of the popular prophets for forecasting the future. Laser-associated computer technology for information storage and retrieval, video cassettes, and videoaudio information discs are some of the features of the new advances to receive more attention in the future. The laser switch of Bell Laboratories also will help phone calls and will be an important part of the optical communication system. Laser oceanography, laser earthquake detection, and laser lighthouse systems will all be expanded greatly in the future. Laser surveillance will expand greatly in the future. Laser metalworking and materials processing in almost every medium are expanding rapidly in industry and hopefully will be accompanied by effective laser safety programs. To develop progress in laser technology, flexible, dynamic safety programs, applications of the laser where needed, and multidisciplined cooperative programs are needed.
