ABSTRACT

Electrooptics is a rapidly expanding new field of laser technology with many excellent lines of communications between electronics and optics. For the field of communications, there has already been emphasis on the single mode optical fiber which can be fed only by the coherent beam of the laser. The basic system includes a He-Ne laser, a light modulator, a variety of optical components, and continuous film transport mechanisms. One difficulty with the use of the laser for communication has been the loss of transmission through atmospheric propagation of the beam especially in bad fog or rainy weather. The laser has important applications in the field of computer technology, in the range of machine design, layout testing, and printing. American, Japanese, and Russian investigators are studying earthquake forecasting by means of combined laser and computer technology. High output argon and tunable dye lasers are used in oceanography studies.
