ABSTRACT

The recent resurgence of the walleye population has rekindled sport fishing interest in western Lake Erie. This chapter presents information on natural reefs in Lake Erie, in the hope that these data will be useful in planning the placement and configuration of artificial reefs in other areas of the Great Lakes. Scuba divers who have inspected reefs in western Lake Erie have observed walleye lying motionless on the rocky bottom during daylight. In 1964, the author made a number of underwater observations of the bedrock reefs and shoals in western Lake Erie. The objective of this investigation was to determine the extent and character of the rock on the lake bottom, particularly to relate surface features to solution processes, water movements and utilization by aquatic organisms. Ennis Reef is located on the International Boundary approximately 3.2 km NNW of North Bass Island.
