ABSTRACT

Federal regulations developed for asbestos under the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) require all asbestos to be thoroughly wet with a water and surfactant mixture prior to removal. Under EPA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Department of Transportation regulations, asbestos-containing waste must be properly containerized prior to removal from the abatement area. Many state and local agencies impose additional containerization requirements, and some disposal facilities impose even further requirements on how asbestos-containing wastes must be prepared for final disposal at their facility. Once the asbestos is properly containerized, labeled, and marked and the outside of the container is thoroughly cleaned, the crew inside the abatement area should hand the containers through an air lock to an outside crew for immediate loading onto a truck. A truck to be used for transporting asbestos-containing waste should have a completely enclosed body.
