ABSTRACT

It should be apparent that thorough documentation and accurate recordkeeping are two necessary activities which help ensure the professionalism of companies in the asbestos abatement industry. The ability to defend adequately against future claims of negligence will be the ability to demonstrate prudent behavior through proper records and documentation. There are two basic reasons for documenting asbestos-related activities. One is based on regulatory requirements; the other is the need to go the extra mile and utilize selectively recommended recordkeeping. The National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants regulation addresses specific work activities in mandating that there be no visible emissions to the outside air during demolition or renovation, waste transport, and disposal. It is important to maintain adequate personnel records which are organized to permit easy access and retrieval. In addition to the regulatory requirements pertaining to the medical questionnaire, physical examination and physician's statement, employees' exposure monitoring, and respirator protection program, additional records are recommended.
