ABSTRACT

Using the mammalian reoviruses as a model system, we have been studying how viruses that cause systemic disease penetrate the gastrointestinal tract and enter the host. We initially examined the penetration of the gastrointestinal mucosa by reovirus type 1 which causes ependymitis in suckling mice. For this purpose, closed ileal loops were prepared in suckling mice and injected with approximately 10” particles of purified reovirus type 1. Loops were removed between 30 min and 4 hr after inoculation and processed for electron microscopy.
