ABSTRACT

In 1983, Chessie System Railroad wanted us to train 30,000 employees in a short period of time so that we could closely monitor and measure the effectiveness of back school. Individuals were selected from each of their seven divisions and, in a week-long workshop, prepared to conduct a back school. Many find it impossible to believe that people they've been working with for years will suddenly accept them as authorities on back trouble. The trainers who go through the authors' program graduate with diplomas that they can display as desired, and are able to go back into the work environment with credibility and confidence of certified instructors for American Back School. Enthusiasm makes the difference. Trainers need to become enthusiastic about their work. Mechanical, robotic trainers simply don't get results. On the other hand, genuine enthusiasm is contagious. Trainers who take it seriously see how beneficial it can be, not just to their employer but also to their co-worker friends.
