ABSTRACT

Tuber crops constitute one of the most important groups of crops of tropics and cassava is one of the most widely cultivated tuber crops serving as the major staple food of more than 300 million people in the tropics. Nearly 65% of the total production is utilized for food and the rest is utilized in the feed and industrial sector. Cassava belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae. Cassava is monoecious and unisexual. Each flower has five united sepals but not petals. Male flowers have ten stems arranged in two whirls of five each. A well-drained loamy or sandy loams with sufficient organic matter is the best soil for the cultivation of cassava. Proper tuber formation takes place only in those soils which are loose and friable. On heavy clay and rocky soils, the yield will be poor due to restricted tuber development.
