ABSTRACT

Several investigators have examined the possible use of controlled release materials as schistosomacides. Molluscicides are materials that destroy molluscs such as snails and slugs. Various species of snails serve as hosts for parasites that affect man, his domestic animals, and wildlife of economic or ecological importance to man. The several parasitic diseases constitute serious human health problems. Angiostrongyliasis is a disease of the central nervous system arising from infection with Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a nematode. It is endemic in Hawaii, various other Pacific islands, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the Philippines. Fascioliasis does affect man, however, in localized endemic areas of South America and the Caribbean. It is generally considered an infection of ruminants. Fasciolopsiasis is a trematode infection of the small intestine, particularly in the duodenal area. Massive infections produce acute intestinal obstruction, edema of the abdominal wall and legs occurs, and ascites and sometimes secondary anemia is likely.
