ABSTRACT

After the discovery of bacteriophages in 19 15 to 1917 by Twort' and d'HCrelle,2 phages were found in many bacteria. By 1955, at least 5655 papers, books, or monographs on phages had been published."esearch was centered on the nature of phages, host range, ecology, phage typing, and therapy. The first phages were studied in the electron microscope by Ruska4 and Kottmann5 shortly after 1940, but electron microscopes were scarce and morphological data were slow to accumulate.
