ABSTRACT
The general history of virus taxonomy is reviewed in the first chapter, and it is not my intention to repeat that account here. Nevertheless events over the past 50 years have shaped the present state of invertebrate virus taxonomy. Therefore in this section a summary of developments relating specifically to viruses affecting insects is given.
